ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Prior to joining Advanced Energy in 2006, Maria Mauceri worked with Bernard Construction performing home renovations. She also worked as a research assistant at Virginia Tech, performing surveys of stormwater management plans in Virginia and surrounding states and researching sustainable agricultural practices. As construction-site supervisor for Habitat for Humanity, Mauceri led volunteer groups in the construction of high-performance homes using SystemVision.

Today, Mauceri is a building science associate with Advanced Energy’s Applied Building Science team. She provides critical analysis of residential structures, conducts field research, data collection and diagnostic testing. Mauceri was also the 2008 co-director of the North Carolina Sustainable Design Competition.

MY PHILOSOPHY ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY

In my work at Advanced Energy, my personal goal is to improve the quality of buildings and communities, thereby improving the quality of life for the people who live, work and play in them. Energy efficiency is only one component of a broad-scale approach to designing and creating better buildings. The goal is to construct and retrofit buildings to be healthy, durable, comfortable, safe, energy efficient and environmentally responsible. A similar goal applies to designing and building better communities. To make any of these goals a reality, we need to be good designers and follow the project through the implementation process. We also need to make sure everyone involved in the project is aware of the priorities and is committed to the same goal. Once a project is completed, verification, maintenance and occupant behavior are critical to ensure that the buildings and communities operate at their full potential. In any project it is important to keep a broad view while paying close attention to the details each step of the way. Every decision has impacts; the challenge is to remain open to new ideas.
