Builder's Series

Advanced Energy's Builder's Series - Building High Performance Homes - is designed to help the builder sell homes at a greater profit by increasing the home's value, decreasing carrying costs and eliminating callbacks. Our training prepares key members of the builder's team — the framing crew, the duct installers, the HVAC equipment installers, the insulation crew and even the realtors — with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to build a home that is healthy, safe, comfortable, durable and energy efficient.

Description

Ten Trends in Residential Construction That Are Hitting Your Bottom Line (1 day)

This introductory workshop examines significant trends in residential construction over the past three decades and their effect on homeowners and homebuilders. Trends such as more forced air heating and cooling systems - with fewer returns - combined with tighter houses can create serious and unforeseen problems. These problems translate into unhappy homeowners and costly callbacks for the builder.

This session focuses on how the various components of the home, including the occupants, must be viewed as a system (SystemVision™). Change one part of the system and the whole system is affected. The session concludes with practical, cost-effective solutions.

Moisture, Mold and Mildew (1 day)

The primary cause of building failure in residential structures is moisture. Furthermore, the medical community is increasingly identifying mold and mildew as serious health threats. In many parts of the country, moisture in the air and in the ground can be as formidable an adversary as rain and ground run-off.

Attendees will learn the four methods of moisture transport and which are the most critical to the health and comfort of the homeowners and to the durability of the building. Controversial building techniques, such as EFIS and sealed crawl spaces, will be discussed, as well as practical, cost-effective solutions to common problems.

The Healthier House — Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation (1 day)

This workshop focuses on indoor air quality (IAQ). Topics presented:

  • Sources of pollutants, such as carpets, furniture finishes and combustion; and their consequences
  • The latest results in research on issues such as soot deposition
  • Fresh air ventilation - the need for ventilation and filtration and various proven strategies for providing adequate fresh air

The Building Shell — Framing, Insulation and the 3-C Barrier (1 day)

What is the 3-C Barrier? It stands for the continuous, contiguous comfort barrier and it is critical to the comfort, durability and energy efficiency of a home. 3-C components:

  • Framing
  • Insulation that attaches to the framing
  • Air barrier
  • Vapor retarder system

Topics covered:

  • Common mistakes and misunderstandings in both the design and the implementation of the 3-C barrier
  • Consequences of a poor 3-C barrier
  • Cost-effective and proven techniques for constructing an effective 3-C barrier

Mastering the application of these barriers will ensure comfortable homes - including bonus rooms that really work!

HVAC Issues and Opportunities for the Builder (1 day)

Few elements of the home building process have changed as much over the past two decades as the heating and cooling (HVAC) systems. Never before has the builder and homeowner had available to them the variety and quality of equipment that is on the market today. Unfortunately, study after study across the nation has demonstrated that few HVAC systems perform up to their potential.

This workshop explores the impacts of typical HVAC systems and examines the builder's options for getting a system that provides comfort. Interactions between the quality of the home (see the 3-C barrier, above) and the HVAC system are a central focus of this workshop. As always, proven, cost-effective solutions are presented.

Consumer Night — How to Buy or Build a Quality Home (3 evening hours)

This workshop is presented in the evening and complements the core Builder's Series. Attendees learn the fundamental principles of building science and how to discuss these issues with a builder. Focus areas include:

  • Moisture
  • The 3-C barrier
  • HVAC issues
  • Indoor air quality

The goal is to train attendees how to find homes that are healthy, safe, comfortable, durable, and energy efficient.

Realtor Training (1/2 day)

This workshop also makes an effective add-on to the Builder's Series. It is designed for realtors/sales agents who will be selling homes under a building science-related program, or for a builder who has adopted the house system approach.

The focus of the workshop is to teach realtors to sell the benefits of homes built according to building science principles. Also covered are the basics of building science and specific sales ideas. In addition, the host organization can include information about its particular program, and an optional half-day field experience can easily be added.
