Indoor Air and Comfort

One of the most common issues facing the HVAC industry is indoor air quality. How does a HVAC company or utility deal with complaints regarding odors, moisture, combustion by-products and mold or mildew? How do they know if the home they are about to work in already has a ventilation problem?

These are problems that may be blamed on the building company at a later date. The best prevention and protection for housing professionals is to be well informed.

Course Length

2-day workshops over a period of a week

Description

The Healthier House — Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation (2 days)

This workshop focuses on indoor air quality (IAQ). Topics presented:

  • Sources of pollutants, such as carpets, furniture finishes and combustion; and their consequences
  • The latest results in research on issues such as soot deposition
  • Fresh air ventilation - the need for ventilation and filtration and various proven strategies for providing adequate fresh air

Carbon Monoxide and Combustion Safety (2 days)

This workshop teaches a simple but comprehensive combustion safety checklist that home performance professionals can integrate into their business whether they are an inspector, an HVAC contractor or selling forensic diagnostics services.

The combustion checklist guides the user through a detailed examination of homes with fireplaces, furnaces, fossil fuel water heaters, ovens and cooktops and other potential sources of combustion safety problems. It enables the user to:

  • Diagnose existing or potential problems
  • Design cost-effective repairs

The same checklist can be used after comfort and/or moisture repairs to ensure changes made to the home did not inadvertently create combustion problems. Technical content includes:

  • Causes and effects of carbon monoxide in homes
  • Causes and effects of house pressure differences
  • Materials selection and installation techniques for effective repairs

The course also covers the various types of diagnostic equipment that are needed to conduct this level of inspection.

Who Should Attend

  • HVAC contractors
  • Home inspectors
  • Any building professional
