Plug-in Hybrid Electric School Bus

Welcome to the Plug-in Hybrid Electric School Bus Project

The Plug-in Hybrid Electric School Bus Project is a collaborative effort led by Advanced Energy to transform the nation’s school bus market by introducing plug-in hybrid technology.

History

This project started in 2002 with the realization that school buses could benefit from plug-in hybrid technology. Advanced Energy formed an advisory group to determine the best path forward. With funding from several key sponsors, we completed analyses that evaluated the technical and the economic feasibility of our ideas. With our partners, we formed a consortium representing bulk purchasing power and awarded a 20 bus order to International Truck and Engine Corporation in 2006. The buses will be delivered throughout 2007 to school districts across the United States. Future phases of the project include monitoring performance of this first group of buses and organizing a larger fleet purchase.
