Project Background
The Plug-In Hybrid Electric School Bus [HESB] Project started in 2002 with recognition that school buses could benefit from plug-in hybrid technology. Advanced Energy, a non-profit located in Raleigh, N.C., that focuses on energy efficiency, formed an advisory group to help determine the best path forward.

With funding from several key sponsors, analyses that evaluated the technical and the economic feasibility of the technology were completed. With partners, Advanced Energy formed a consortium representing bulk purchasing power. A request for proposals [RFP] to manufacture and deliver 20 plug-in hybrid electric school buses was issued and awarded to International Truck and Engine Corporation in 2006.
