Motor Management

The annual operating cost of a motor is often many times its initial cost. And, anticipating when a motor might fail can be important in achieving production goals. That's why developing a sound motor management policy that determines when, whether, and how motors should be replaced and repaired is a wise investment.

Advanced Energy's Services

Advanced Energy specialists have the knowledge and experience to develop unbiased motor management policies for any company. These policies define the appropriate repair and replacement actions based on the company's specific motor applications and unique economic factors.

With our accredited test lab, Advanced Energy is also able to evaluate motors to solve specific performance and application issues.

Our goal is to help you produce more product at a lower cost. We offer a variety of motor management services to assist with both short- and long-term motor management needs.

Policy Components

Our specialists assist clients with establishing various types of policies to insure that motors are being managed for optimum cost-effectiveness. Policy components are customized to best meet the clients needs from the very basic to comprehensive. Examples of our policy development services include:

  • Motor Management Assessment Process (Motor MAP)
A tool to evaluate the status of existing motor management policies and practices. Motor MAP facilitates making motor management improvements where they will provide the most bang-for-the-buck in a given facility.
  • Purchase and repair policies
Development of new motor purchase and motor repair specifications to ensure quality and reliability. May also include a qualification of new motor and motor repair service providers.
  • Repair vs. replacement policies
The decision to repair or replace a motor that has failed has a direct impact on operating costs and reliability. Evaluating motors and makeing the repair vs. replace decision in advance of their failure avoids panic driven decisions which may be costly in the long run.
  • Spare motor inventory and replacement motor availability policies
Assuring that the right motors are available in a timely manner so that the quickest resolution to a motor failure is also the most economical and reliable, is critical to an effective motor management policy.
  • Other motor management policy components may include:
    • Horsepower breakpoint determination
    • Motor inventory analysis
    • Critical motor planning
    • Motor surveys and tagging
    • Tracking system
    • Preventive and predictive maintenance
    • Client-specific cases

CASE STUDY

In Situ Testing on Vertical Pump Motors

Two vertical pump motors, one old rewound and one new, were tested on-site to determine efficiency, operating load and temperature rise. This data confirmed for the plant manager the benefits of investing in the new motor. The vertical configuration of these motors prevented their being tested on the AE dynamometer.
