The Korean Government recently enacted motor efficiency regulations that require motors sold domestically to meet minimum efficiency standards, similar to the United States EPCA General Purpose Motor Efficiency Regulations. The government is also funding the establishment of a motor test facility that will be operated by Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in Changwon, Korea to aid in the certification process and enforce the regulations for motors sold in the Korean Market. KERI has contracted with Advanced Energy to assist in their efforts to become a National Voluntary Laboratory Accredited Program (NVLAP) laboratory. The objective is for the laboratory to earn accreditation by July of 2010. To become a NVLAP facility, accurate dynamometers and instrumentation must be available and certified personnel must utilize stringent procedures that are all audited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST conducts audits of the certified laboratories and round- robin testing of motors regularly to insure the laboratories maintain the necessary levels of performance. Advanced Energy will ensure that KERI’s laboratory provides accurate and consistent test results. Advanced Energy is the first laboratory in the world to receive a NVLAP accreditation for motor efficiency testing. The company remains the only independent laboratory in North America to hold this accreditation.
