Inside Advanced Energy's Motor Test Lab

AE Achieves Third Party Test Data Program Status with UL
Advanced Energy's Motors and Drives test lab recently achieved acceptance to participate in Underwriters Laboratories' (UL) Third Party Test Data Program. This certification enables us to conduct motor efficiency testing for single-phase and three-phase electric motors and submit results directly to UL. With this certification, we now have the capabilities to test for several standards that we had not been certified for in the past, allowing us to test small motors for efficiency. As efficiency standards for these smaller motors are expected to be regulated for the first time in 2015, we will continue to collaborate with UL in an effort to assist manufacturers of electric motors in meeting the increasing regulations for improved energy efficiency as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

EISA Regulations and DOE Enforcement
We'd like to remind our readers that with the regulations from the Energy Independence Security Act (EISA) now in effect, both motor manufactures and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are responsible for meeting the EISA minimum motor regulations. The DOE has started reviewing records of manufacturers who have not yet filed applications for compliance certificates for EISA covered motors. As many OEMs purchase motors and motor components from manufacturers, OEMs should be conducting testing in accordance with the regulations and keeping careful records of the results. If changes need to be made to meet the requirements, OEMs should be working to validate motors to find the best fit for their equipment needs based on performance. Our Motor Test Lab is busy assisting several companies in obtaining their CC numbers to meet the increasing regulations for improved energy efficiency.

Not sure if you are in compliance with all of the new regulations? We can help! For more information about our motor testing and consulting capabilities, visit our web site or contact Kitt Butler at 919 857-9017.

PEV Program: Status Update
AE recently attended the Electrical Apparatus Service Association's (EASA) 2011 National Convention in Denver, Colorado, to create awareness for our Proven Efficiency Verification (PEV) program for the motor repair industry. With PEV certification, service centers and their customers gain an edge in the marketplace. By ensuring a motor service center's ability to maintain efficiency during the repair process, the service center and then their customers are contributing to energy savings and reducing energy costs. We have several motor repair service centers currently in the process of achieving their PEV certification. Motor service centers interested in participating in the program can download the application here or click here for more information on our PEV program.

Upcoming Events

  • Energy Efficiency in Motor Driven Systems (EEMODS) 2011 Conference, Washington, DC, September 12-14 (Bronze Sponsor)
Our own Dr. Emmanuel Agamloh will be co-presenting “An automated test system for induction motor efficiency measurement to IEEE and IEC standards” with Dr. Dae Won Kim, lab manager, Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI).  If you’ve been a long-time subscriber, you might remember we assisted KERI in the certification process to become the first Korean NVLAP-certified facility. As a Bronze-level sponsor, we look forward to participating in this conference to demonstrate our support for and commitment to this industry. Click here for more information.

  • The Consortiums for Energy Efficiency’s (CEE) Annual Industry Partners Meeting, Denver, Colorado, October 4-6
Kitt Butler, director, Motors and Drives, will be attending to participate in the Motor Systems Summit Meeting. Click here for more information.
