In last quarter’s newsletter, we reported the Department of Energy (DOE) scheduled a public meeting on December 17, 2009 regarding proposed efficiency standards for ‘Small Electric Motors.’ Advanced Energy attended the meeting to continue our contributions in this important process. You can review the transcript of this meeting to review status as of 12/17/10. You will note references to Advanced Energy’s participation in the transcript. The schedule for publication of the Final Rule is by February 28, 2010. As a result of some of the comments and observations made at the December meeting, Advanced Energy was asked to provide supplemental efficiency tests in support of the soon to be published Final Rule. Once this rule is published, you can download a copy from the Federal Register, DOE web site or visit the Advanced Energy Motor and Drive web site where you will find a copy located on the Knowledge Library page under the motor regulations section.
The IEEE114 Small Motor Single Phase Electric Motor Test Standard Update
The IEEE Motor Test Standards Committee is nearing completion of updates to the IEEE114 Test Standard. A meeting was held this January in St. Louis by member of the committee to formalize and draft the proposed updated standard for submission to the IEEE Ballot Committee. Advanced Energy’s National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) Test Facility has been providing IEEE114 testing services to the industry and is leading this committee’s endeavors to establish and maintain the highest standards possible for the test and verification of motor efficiency.
Yokogawa WT3000 Power Analyzer to Assist with High-Accuracy and Wide-Frequency Data Collection
Recently, Advanced Energy added a Yokogawa WT3000 Power Analyzer to our inventory of highly accurate and flexible metering and data acquisition equipment. This meter is capable of both high accuracy and a wide frequency range, with the basic power accuracy ± (0.02% of reading + 0.04% of range) and the frequency range of DC, 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz. “The WT 3000 enhances our data acquisition capabilities for power quality in our Motor and Drives area,” said Ken Dulaney, Vice President of Engineering at Advanced Energy. “But it will also be used for highly accurate field measurements of energy saving devices and could be used in our electric transportation program to monitor plug-in vehicle charging stations.”
Motor, Drive & Automation Systems 2010 Conference
The Co-located Motor, Drive and Automation Systems 2010 and Magnetics 2010 Conferences held at the Hilton Disney January 28 – 29 provided attendees with an opportunity to attend both informative presentations and to network with approximately 50 exhibitors and nearly 400 industry professionals. Advanced Energy Exhibited and David Berkowitz, Director of OEM Test Services participated in a panel session entitled Advancements in Motor and Drive Systems. We encourage you to consider attending next year, as this was the first time both conferences were held together, and the event was very successful. As details concerning the conference are made available we will keep you informed.
2010 Electrical Apparatus Service Association, Inc. (EASA) Convention
Visit us at booth #823 during the 2010 EASA Convention in Orlando on June 27-29, to learn more about our testing and consulting services. We will be exhibiting our quality assurance program for electric motor repair, Proven Efficiency Verification.
Recent Publications
‘What motor users need to know’ by Kitt Butler, Director, Motor and Drives, appeared in the November 2009 issue of the International Society of Automation’s (ISA) InTech online publication. The article addresses implication of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 that will take effect December 19, 2010 for Motor Manufacturers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) and end users.
