The U.S. Department of Energy has begun the rule making process to establish minimum efficiency requirements for small motors not presently covered by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1992 or the recent Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007. Both single phase and poly phase two-digit frame motors are being considered in the ultimate regulations. One of the first steps in establishing minimum efficiency standards is to gain a better understanding of the efficiency of motors in the available population today. Advanced Energy is currently performing efficiency testing to develop the baseline data on select motor models to support this effort. The three test standards used include IEEE 112 A and B as well as IEEE 114. Existing electric motor efficiency regulations require that a NVLAP test laboratory be used to submit data to establish compliance with the law. Advanced energy has the only independent NVLAP motor test facility in North America certified for energy efficiency testing. As updates are available on this process, the Advanced Energy Motors and Drives quarterly newsletter will keep you informed.
