Inside Advanced Energy's Motor Test Lab

Hard to believe 2012 is right around the corner, but if you’re like us, you’re looking ahead to what’s coming up for motors and drives. So instead of recapping 2011, here’s our outlook for new programs, initiatives and regulations for 2012. Enjoy!

New Utility–Sponsored Motor Rewind/Repair Program for 2012
We're partnering with Arizona Public Service (APS) on our first utility-sponsored motor repair program to be rolled out in 2012. The program will offer utility incentives for motor rewind. We plan to open our workshop series to more than 15 motor service centers in Arizona by distributing PEV applications to interested motor service centers who are APS customers. APS will be providing more information as the program rollout gets underway. Click here for more information on our current motor repair program.

EISA Regulations and DOE Enforcement
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is expected to finalize motor types under the supplemental notice rule making that was issued March 30, 2011. This could possible double the amount of motors covered under the current regulations by September 2012. Additionally, Canadian regulations similar to the existing U.S. motor efficiency regulations under EISA are set to go into effect April 12, 2012.

2015 will bring even more regulation changes:

  • Small Electric Motor regulations will go into effect in the United States – the first time these specific motors will be regulated in the world; and
  • China, Europe and South America will be coming online with their regulations as well.

The Appliance Standard Awareness Project (ASAP) website provides a brief outline on electric motor standards. ASAP organizes and leads a broad-based coalition effort that works to advance, win and defend new appliance, equipment and lighting standards which deliver large energy and water savings, monetary savings and environmental benefits.

Other Additional Information:

Not sure if you are in compliance with all of the new regulations? We can help! For more information about our motor testing and consulting capabilities, visit our web site or contact Kitt Butler at 919 857-9017.

Motor Renewal Program Update: Jay Electric of Birmingham, Ala. Receives Certification
Jay Electric Company of Birmingham, Ala., has recently achieved Proven Efficiency Verification accreditation for motor repair – a stringent quality assurance program to ensure consistency in repairs while achieving energy savings. Jay Electric Company is now one of only seven motor repair service centers in North America to receive this accreditation, demonstrating they have the necessary standards and procedures in place to return repaired motors to "like new" condition and performance.

"Advanced Energy's Proven Efficiency Verification program is an important achievement not only for our company, but our customers as well," says Bret Lehr, President of Jay Electric Company. "By achieving this status, we're taking our dedication to customer service and product excellence one step further. Our customers can be confident that their motors being repaired or rewound by our company are of the highest quality while meeting efficiency levels."
