Repair Shop Selection

Your motor repair vendor should be selected based on their ability to provide high quality repair services. The quality of a good repair far outweighs any money saved by using a "lowest bid" repair vendor. The operating cost for maintaining the current motor efficiency and reliability is well worth the extra cost of a quality repair.

Potential motor repair vendors should provide you a quote based on meeting your motor repair specification. If you do not have a specification we can help you develop specifications that are designed to meet your specific business needs. Less carefully developed specifications can result in insufficient quality or excessive repair costs. Quotes based on your specifications tell the potential vendors that you want a good price on high quality repairs and allows you to make an "apples-to-apples" comparison.

A motor repair vendor that maintains a quality assurance program (ISO 9001, EASA Q, PEV) is another way to ensure quality repair.

  • PEV (Proven Excellence Verification) is a repair shop certification that we offer to repair vendors and anyone that wants to ensure that the facility that they are using is providing quality repairs. Our program can be customized to fit the needs of your company. The program test motors before and after repair to verify that the motor performance and reliability are not degraded due to repair.

PEV certified customers include:

  • Shermco Industries, Inc. -- Irving, Texas. Entering it’s fifth consecutive year with a certificate valid through July 2007. "Realizing the value to our customers of an independent, third-party evaluating our operation," said Scott Meador, vice president of Shermco Industries, "repair processes were modified to meet the PEV certification. Now, when our PEV credentials are presented to the customer, he doesn't second guess his decision regarding repair shop selection. We have found that the smart customer is not driven by the cheapest price, but by the most reliable repair. And the PEV certification provides that comfort level."
  • Hupp Electric Motors, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Entered sixth consecutive year in our program with a certificate of use valid through March 1, 2008. “We were the first motor service center in the country to get the PEV credentials from Advanced Energy and it has continually paid dividends," said Chuck Rutledge, vice president of Hupp Electric Motors. "Companies that understand the importance of quality motor repair to their bottom line realize they can work with us and improve their process reliability while decreasing their operating expenses. It makes good business sense for them and for us."

Other items to consider when selecting a repair shop, once quality service is assured, are turnaround time, cost, pick-up or delivery services, and general customer service. Please visit our guidelines to good motor repair for more information or click here for our PEV application.

CASE STUDY

Replacement Metric Motor Test

A potential replacement for a metric loom motor was tested and determined to be no more efficient than the original metric motor, and in fact ran with 1.7% lower speed. Using this motor would have provided no reliability improvement and would have resulted in reduced production.
