Advanced Energy Evaluates PHEV Charge Control Technology

The transportation industry is at the beginning of a major transition to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). But what impact will PHEVs have on the electric grid? Advanced Energy, in collaboration with Duke Energy, Progress Energy, Dominion and North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation, conducted an assessment of GridPoint's Electric Vehicle Management (EVM) solution to determine how PHEVs will affect distribution systems with regards to uncontrolled charging and potential additional loads during peak periods. GridPoint’s EVM manages the flow of electricity to plug-in vehicles and charging stations. Advanced Energy evaluated the capabilities of each control scheme available through the Smart Charging Portal, including time of day, energy demand, energy price and charging location.
