Advanced Energy is excited to welcome Tommy Blair as a building science specialist. Tommy grew up in Alaska and headed to North Carolina to attend school, earning a degree in sustainable technologies from Cape Fear Community College.
Tommy’s interest in environmental sustainability started at a young age after seeing the impacts of climate change firsthand, and throughout his life, he has put his passion to work. Over the last decade in particular, he has worked as a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rater, provided quality assurance for programs targeting existing homes and new home construction, and served as an adjunct instructor at Central Carolina Community College. In this latter role, he teaches students about renewable and residential energy modeling principles.
Advanced Energy has actually been on Tommy’s radar for a few years: he attended the Advanced Energy-hosted Rater Camp (now the Residential Construction Summit) back in 2011 and appreciated the organization’s mission. When the position for building science specialist opened up, Tommy knew it was a great fit given his strong technical background.
In his new job, Tommy will be dedicating much of his time to supporting SystemVision, one of Advanced Energy’s affordable housing programs. SystemVision uses practical solutions and simplified processes to aid developers and builders in designing, constructing and marketing affordable homes. Therefore, Tommy will frequently be out in the field, testing and advising on how to build more efficiently. He will also help with other building-related projects. Tommy has an additional interest in technical writing and hopes to contribute his skills and knowledge to writing reports and articles.
When not working, Tommy can often be found hiking with his dog and son. He also enjoys running, and as an ultrarunner, he tackles races as long as 100 miles.
With Tommy’s background and technical expertise, he will be able to make an immediate impact on the building science industry and Advanced Energy’s residential work. The team is excited to have him on board.
