Advanced Energy Welcomes Benjamin Scharff as an Electrical Engineer

By Kristi Brodd | April 1, 2019

Advanced Energy and our solar team are excited to welcome Benjamin Scharff as an Electrical Engineer II. Benjamin grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University.

Benjamin’s interest in the field stemmed primarily from family ties: Several of his family members work in engineering, and it turned out to be a good fit for him as well. He most recently worked for Duke Energy Progress at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. As a Balance of Plant Mechanical Systems Engineer, Benjamin was responsible for maintaining the reliability of several systems on the generation side of the plant.

Benjamin saw the opportunity at Advanced Energy as a new challenge and a chance to broaden his expertise. He had experience in the engineering and utility worlds, and now he would be able to gain exposure to solar technology as well.

In his role as an electrical engineer, Benjamin will spend much of his time in the field, supporting Advanced Energy’s Solar Interconnection Commissioning Program to ensure that independent power producer facilities that are interconnected to the utility grid comply with necessary documentation, codes and standards. He will help to troubleshoot photovoltaic systems and write reports detailing the findings.

Outside of work, Benjamin enjoys going to the movies (his favorite genre is sci-fi) and playing tennis and video games.

Benjamin’s prior experience makes him a great fit for Advanced Energy. The solar team is happy to have him on board, and he is eager to contribute his knowledge and skills.
